Below are 7 frames of an earlier alternative splash landing after Mumble and
Lovelace’s mid-air collision showing a more voluntary abandonment of the iceberg by the
Adelies, commanded by Ramon. I changed it later to the more accidental dismount
caused by the Orca’s midair collision and crashing down onto the berg to be more spectacular and
emphasize the Adelies’ unwillingness to enter the water. We had also had an earlier abandonment of the
buoy-berg after Mumble and Lovelace disappear into the depths. The Adelies were
cut off at the pass by the second orca and quickly adopt another small berg
with a Newton’s cradle gag. We later decided to keep the adelies on the original berg for
brevity and to simplify the scene. That explains why the Adelies are on a
smaller berg in the latter half of the story boards.
